Sunscreen for Men Decoded - The Why, When and How of Sunscreen Use

If we had a dollar every time some random conspiracy dude told us that sunscreen is a hoax, we would have 5 dollars. That means, on 5 separate occasions we were asked if sunscreen was a myth. That is 5 times more than what we are comfortable with. It is 2022 and finally time to decode sunscreen for men

Sunscreen for men was not a popping category in the personal care range. Sunscreen is an afterthought for most men and a good majority don’t even use it. That is just simply unacceptable. Why should I use sunscreen? Good question, here is the answer.

1. Protection from UV rays

As long as you are not a flat-earther that believes that sun is a projection on a screen, you probably know what UV rays. UVA and UVB rays can really mess with your skin - which we know isn’t good. UVA rays are linked to ageing, wrinkling, leathery skin as well as liver spots while both types of rays are linked to inflammation, immune issues, and most distressingly skin cancer! Prolonged exposure to these ‘radiations’ can also cause sunburns. That's why we need sunscreen to protect us from UV rays and prolonged naked exposure. Sunscreen (or sunblock) as the names suggest screens (or blocks) these UVA and UVB rays.  That way, we can enjoy the sun responsibly, as well as avoid getting any ugly blemishes and having our skin age significantly prematurely with wrinkles, leathery skin, liver spots, actinic keratosis, solar elastosis and even some forms of skin cancer.

2. The Tanning Conundrum

This won’t be very scientific but rather anthropological. Tanning is a cool skincare trend in countries whose inhabitants have pale skin. We are not a country like that. The Indian mindset towards tanning is not something to rave about. So there is a deep-set insecurity in most of us having the skin ‘reduce’ our skin colour. If this is getting uncomfortable to read, it’s because it’s true. There is nothing to be ashamed about, it’s just how it is. Sunscreen is a great way to avoid tanning as it blocks the sun (call back to the name sunblock).

Now that we know sunscreen is good for us, here is how you should use sunscreen.

  1. Apply it 10-15 minutes before stepping outdoors.

  2. Apply wherever skin is exposed.

  3. Top-up throughout the day (every 3 hours or so) and after swimming or heavily sweating.

Here is a PureBrown Pro-Tip:

Use sunscreen even when it is not hot or sunny out. UV rays don’t stop harming your skin just because there is some cloud cover around. This is a common mistake that is easily avoidable

So we have decoded the why use sunscreen and how to use sunscreen. Now let’s look at how to select the best sunscreen for men:

Choosing a sunblock can be an overwhelming experience if you are new to it, but it doesn’t have to be. The lingo seems like rocket science but we have your back. There are 4 things to look for while selecting a new sunscreen

1. SPF

Sounds too scientific- it just stands for Sun Protection Factor. Simply put it's a measure of how much solar energy (UV radiation) is required to produce sunburn on protected skin relative to the amount of solar energy required to produce sunburn on unprotected skin. As the SPF value increases, sunburn protection increases. An SPF 30 sunscreen blocks out about 97%, You should be good with anything 30 or above as the increase is only marginal after 30 or 50.

2. Chemical Ingredients

Like most skincare products sunscreen also contain dangerous chemicals. Always read the labels of the sunscreen products you are using and ensure that you know what you are putting on your face. We recommend ensuring that your sunscreen offers natural protection.

3. Absorption quotient

Applying sunscreen should not be annoying or irritating to your skin. There should not be a residual overlay post-application. This usually happens when your sunscreen is cream-based. Try a water-based sunscreen which your skin can easily absorb.

4. Skin chemistry

The skin of the male and female of our species are different biologically and chemically compositionally. So ensure that your sunscreen is tailor-made for your skincare needs.

Here is a Pure Brown Pro Tip:

If you are in the market for an easily absorbed water-based sunscreen for men (yes for men, tailor-made for men’s skin and skin chemistry) that offers natural protection without harmful ingredients in it, take a look at Pure Brown’s Sunscreen.
