5-Toxic Ingredients to Watch Out for in Skin Care Products for Men

Have you ever turned your skincare products over and read the ingredients list? If the answer is yes, then you are better than most people in the market for skincare products. If the answer is no, do it and you will be in for a big surprise!

The devil is in the details, and the labels on the back of these products should not be missed! You could avoid a lot of trial and error if you took some time out, and gave these labels a read. Most products come with harmful ingredients that are camouflaged with scientific terms that are not comprehensible to most of us. If you're serious about your skincare, then you'll want to avoid the toxins and chemicals that are hidden in most skincare products for men

Reading labels and knowing all the ingredients in the products you use is your first step towards beautiful skin. If you are interested in finding out what ingredients to avoid, here's a list of 5 very common toxic ingredients found in skin care products for men:

  • SLS (Sodium lauryl sulfate)

Sodium lauryl sulfate is one of the most commonly found toxins in skincare products. SLS was originally designed as an industrial degreaser and was never meant to be used on human skin because it's an excellent foaming agent and is typically used in products to create a rich lather and is linked with skin irritation.

If a skincare product foams up in your hand during use, chances are it contains sodium lauryl sulfate. This chemical has been found in over 90% of personal care products and does not have to be listed on the label. While SLS often leads to skin irritation at the very least, it can also make acne worse and is associated especially with cystic acne which is the most painful, difficult and long-lasting form of acne.

Sodium lauryl acetate can cause eye damage, as well as a disruption of the natural balance of skin oils. This also means that it can cause serious damage to the kidneys and lungs. This is because sodium lauryl acetate can react with other chemicals resulting in the production of more harmful compounds called nitrosamines, which have been shown to cause cancer in the body.

  • Parabens

Parabens are preservatives that extend the shelf life of beauty products. However, research has shown that they can penetrate the skin and collect in tissue, potentially leading to health issues. More research needs to be done to clarify their relationship with cancer, however, it's best to be cautious when using these types of products so you don't risk any potential adverse health effects.

  • Triclosan

Triclosan is an anti-microbial agent that has been used in many skincare products for years. Although it was not designed for this purpose initially, the chemical compound has been proven to kill bacteria and is therefore used in soaps and cleaners.

The problem with triclosan is that it also can disrupt our body’s endocrine system, which keeps all of our systems running smoothly. Starting in 2017, Triclosan was banned from certain products because it was found to have adverse health effects on humans after further studies revealed hormonal changes like the risk of cancer and heart conditions within human cells exposed to the chemical compound.

  • Phthalates

These chemical additives can be found often in many different skincare products - hidden from ingredients lists and often included as "fragrances." Phthalates are a possible carcinogen and have been found to negatively impact reproductive health.

  • Resorcinol

Resorcinol is a chemical compound that's used primarily in the production of tires and rubber and it is typically integrated into tire fabric to add strength and elasticity. It can also be found in high-quality wood bonding and dyes, as well as in chemical fertilizers.

Resorcinol is used in skincare products for its anti-inflammatory properties to treat acne, eczema and such dermatological conditions.
